Deciding you’re ready to change your life can be easy. Actually, doing it is a little more difficult. But we can study and learn from the people who have successfully changed their lives. Here are five essential steps that they recommend.
1. Raise your standards
Do you settle for less than you’re worth and less than you want? If you do, it’s time to raise your standards. You’re not obligated to put up with or accept what anyone decides to give you. If you’re in a relationship that isn’t satisfying you, you don’t have to stay. It might hurt to leave, but knowing something better is out there waiting for you makes it worth it. If you’re at a job where you want to move up, show the bosses you’re up to it. Do more than is asked of you. Stay late and finish the project you’re working on. Come in early to help set up for meetings. Raising your standards will create change in your life.
2. Choose your company wisely
You can’t change your life without removing toxic people from your life. If you’re surrounding yourself with negative people, you can’t have a positive and peaceful life. It’s important to stop spending time with people who spend their time complaining and gossiping even if they happen to be your best friend of twenty years. By distancing yourself from them you will create space for people who will uplift and support you. These are the kinds of people you need in your life.
3. Allow yourself to be uncomfortable
You can’t change your life without feeling uncomfortable at some point. You have to step out of your comfort zone if you’re going to make any big changes. There will be times when it’s scary. It’s easy to become complacent in situations even when you know they don’t make you happy. Being uncomfortable is what will help you move forward and get to places you’ve never been. If you want to leave the city you’re in, it’s time to start exploring different ones. Visit a city you’re interested in to see if it’s for you. This will make the change more real in your life and probably trigger some fear. Don’t let your fear stop you. You’ll realize you survived the uncomfortable moment before and can take on anything.
4. Set goals
If you want to change your life, you have to set some goals. By having goals you will know exactly what to focus on. You can set goals for different areas of your life such as career, relationships, health and fitness, and spirituality. Chasing and achieving your goal will create change in your life. If you’ve always wanted to get a degree, it’s time to look into how to make that happen. Getting a degree will not only give you an education, but open up doors for you in the job market. If you want to be a writer, you need to set a daily word count goal and sit down to achieve it every day. Setting goals is good, but you must also work to achieve them.
5. Get active
If you live a sedentary lifestyle, getting active can change your life in a few ways. Exercising releases feel good chemicals in the brain. If you’re depressed or just not as happy or positive as you think you could be, getting active could help you. Being sedentary can also make you feel tired and lazy. Your body can become used to not moving very much, so you’ll find it hard to get going even if you want to. Your body needs to move. You can start small by taking a walk every day. Increase your time as your stamina improves. If you drive everywhere, start walking places that are closer to home. A mile walk might seem daunting now, but once you get used to it you’ll realize it’s not far at all. To have the energy to change your life, you must get up and move your body. Getting active will increase your confidence as well.
Changing your life requires changing your current habits. If you continue to do things in the same way, nothing different will happen. You don’t have to start big right way. Take small steps. Make small changes. Shoot for small improvements. As long as you are moving in the right direction, you will slowly but surely get there.
