Being successful isn’t a stroke of luck. It’s not a card you are dealt in life. Success is something that must be worked for. Here are eight do’s and don’ts that will contribute to yours.
Do: Nail down your goals
If you want to be successful, you need to know exactly what your goals are. Constantly flip-flopping and changing what you want will only slow your progress. Take time to figure out your specific goals. You have to choose goals you’re passionate about, otherwise you won’t stick with them through them ups and downs you’ll face along the journey. Don’t over-commit yourself by choosing too many goals. You may dream big, but you can only do so much at a time, so keep additional ideas on file for later.
You might think you’re good at multitasking, but if you decide to focus on the task at hand, you will get it done more quickly and do it well. When you multitask, you split your attention. If you’re working toward a goal, dedicate yourself to it. Don’t waste time and energy checking and replying to texts during this time. Things like that can wait until you’ve done what you’re working on. Since you probably have limited time to work on achieving your goals, you need to make the most of it.
Do: Continue learning
You might be great at what you do, but there is always something to learn or improve on. As time goes on, things change; being stuck in the past will only hold you back. Learning new things can be overwhelming when you’re used to how you’ve always done something, but in order to be successful, you must be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. Learning doesn’t require you to go back to school. You can learn so much from reading and talking to people who are successful in your area of interest. Never underestimate what you can learn on your own.
Don’t: Over-reward yourself
When you want to be successful, it’s important that you don’t reward yourself for every little thing you accomplish. If you want to write a book, focus on getting the words written and not how you’ll reward yourself for every 500 words you write. You can be proud of yourself and brag to your friends, but you shouldn’t reward yourself with big things until you accomplish something big. Be realistic about what you’ve earned for writing 500 words. A trip to the mall would be unreasonable, but a 10-minute break to stretch and text your bet friend is acceptable.
Do: Be persistent
Achieving success isn’t easy. You are going to encounter setbacks and obstacles. If you want to succeed, you must believe in your goals and be persistent enough to overcome anything you face. Successful people don’t quit every time something gets difficult. You might get frustrated, angry, and cry, but quitting should never be an option. If someone tells you “no,” don’t accept that as a final answer. Keep asking, or ask someone else. There is always a way to get to where you’re going. All you need to do is find the way.
Don’t: Wait for the right time
There is never going to be the perfect time to chase your dreams. If you’re waiting for the perfect amount of money in your bank account, the weather to change, or your mood and energy to improve, you’re wasting valuable time. There will always be an excuse to put off what you want to accomplish. If you start today, you will be that much closer to achieving your dreams. Stop making excuses not to and start thinking of all the reasons you should start now.
Do: Go above and beyond
If you want to be successful in anything in life, decide that you’re going to do more than is expected of you. If you work for someone else, don’t do the minimum amount of work possible. Make yourself useful. Show everyone around you what you have to offer. By doing this you are giving yourself a chance to move up in the company. If you are working out to lose weight and get fit, don’t stop when you’re done what you decided to do. Do extra. Whatever it is you want to succeed in, push yourself to do a little more.
Don’t: Compare yourself to others
Comparing yourself to others is a waste of time. Everyone find success in their own time. Their goals are personal to them just as yours are to you. Don’t look at other people and wonder why you don’t have the house, car, and boat. Don’t assume they didn’t have to work as hard and struggle like you do. Don’t become bitter because people are where you want to be. If anything, use their success to inspire you to work harder. It’s a good idea to avoid social media if you find your mood ruined by seeing what everyone else is doing. Remember that people mostly post the good things happening in their life and less about their struggle to find success. When you stop comparing yourself to others, you will feel more positive and excited about your own goals.
No matter who you are or where you come from, success is possible. You can change the outcome of your efforts by changing your habits. Just put in the effort and the results will take care of themselves.
